Those looking for a little more excitement can try their hand at rock climbing! Chimney Rock State Park partnered with Fox Mountain Guides to offer rock climbing at the Rumbling Bald. Chimney Rock State Park in Western North Carolina is best known for the famed Chimney Rock. Sure, the namesake landmark is the first thing on many people’s bucket lists, but we’ve experienced many more fun things inside this state park. The main ones are at the base of Hickory Nut Falls and at Exclamation Point.

How long is the hike to Chimney Rock?

From mines to state parks, a variety of minerals, crystals, gemstones, and rocks can be found in the Tar Heel State. Due to land constraints, there is no sufficient space for adequate parking at Eagle Rock. The Division recognizes the need for additional parking at this location and is working with community partners to provide improved parking in this area.

Events at Chimney Rock State Park

Our love story begins in Wilmington, where we met while attending UNCW. We love the Carolinas and think they are one of the most special areas in the world. Natasha moved to North Carolina for college years ago (but she's not trying to age herself here). Her days were spent reading a book on the beach and enjoying a cold glass of sweet tea in between classes at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. Upon graduation, she met her partner, Cameron, and they traveled the world together crossing 85 countries and seven continents. During the summer months of June, July, and August, it’s best to arrive early when the park opens or in the evening.

More Things to Do Near Chimney Rock State Park (NC Travel Guides)

Me and husband decided that we were not going to take the elevator and just hike all the way up. It was a fun experience but next time we will take the elevator so we can see the rest of the park. Once you make it to where the flag pole is your not going to want to hike up the rest of the way if you didn't take the elevator. There is also two views of a water fall but we only did the bottom view.

Be sure to confirm the land status and collection rules before you travel to an unfamiliar location or collect any material. There are many places that people can rockhound in the Charlotte NC area. This trail is located inside the Chimney Rock attraction and starts at Exclamation Point. It guides visitors even higher in elevation to Peregrine Point at 2,460 feet. The trailhead is located at the end of the upper parking area, past the restrooms. Pets must be on an attended leash of no longer than 6 feet at all times. Please pick up after your pet when you are at the park; pet waste is not fertilizer and can put plants, other animals, and visitors at risk for disease.

The entirely of Chimney Rock State Park spans for 6,800 acres and is most famous for the granite “Chimney Rock” which is so named because it looks like a rock chimney. Because the drive time from downtown Asheville is just 40-minutes, it’s one our top suggestions for things to do near Asheville. Please do not wander off the trail when hiking, biking, or walking with your pet. Going off trail also increases the chances of encountering ticks, venomous snakes, and poisonous plants. Along the bottom of the scenic Hickory Nut Gorge runs the rushing Rocky Broad River, from Chimney Rock to Lake Lure.

We were starting to get into it with the beautiful rendition of Amazing Grace and Danny Boy and wished they kept playing. The Broad River runs alongside Chimney Rock village and is a gorgeous little oasis on a hot sunny day. This village is a small one street mountain town with stores and restaurants perched on the banks of the Rocky Broad River, tucked in the Hickory Nut Gorge. Chimney Rock is a 35-million-year-old, 315-foot high large granite outcropping located on a summit above the village of Chimney Rock and inside of Chimney Rock State Park. It is located in the Village of Chimney Rock and easily accessible from highway I-40. For my dad, being a big movie buff, enjoyed seeing the film set of Last of the Mohicans staring Daniel Day Lewis, which made the Chimney Rock attraction so famous by the movie.

In order to preserve the beauty of our parks, we would like to remind visitors to please park only in designated areas. Parking along the grass, along road shoulders, and in front of parking signs causes congestion, damages access areas, and could result in a parking citation. Please respect our resources so that they may be conserved for future visitors. Another spot where you can soak in the scenery is Lake Lure Beach and Water Park.
